SALUD SAYS PBA SHOULD SUPPORT TOROMAN’S TEAM



Lawyer Rudy Salud, the founding secretary general of the PBA and its most successful Commissioner along with his mentor, the late Leo Prieto, has taken a strong stand on the pro league’s involvement in international tournaments amid indications that it wishes to continue assuming the responsibility for forming the national team despite an agreement that the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and its Smart Gilas national pool will take over.

Guiao not losing hope on RP five

BEIJING— Putting it in simple terms,Powerade-Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao believes the country is just 10 to 12 points behind the best teams in Asia now.
Despite failing to land at least third place in the Fiba-Asia World Champion qualifying that ended Sunday, Guiao said his perception has changed in just two weeks of handling the national squad in top-notch competition. “My first perspective was that we couldn’t stand up to them anymore,” Guiao told scribes Monday morning, referring to the Middle East squads and China which loomed unbeatable just a few weeks ago in the eyes of the firebrand Burger King mentor.

“But after two weeks here (in the Fiba-Asia), I realized na puede pa pala (that it can still be done),” Guiao said. “Malapit lang pala (they’re not too far in terms of skill and talent after all).”

Toroman singles out three pros for Gilas 5

MANILA, Philippines - Only three players from the Powerade Team Pilipinas that competed in 25th FIBA-Asia Championship in Tianjin, China have earned a second look from Smart Gilas Pilipinas coach Rajko Toroman.
They’re not James Yap, Willie Miller or Cyrus Baguio but Japeth Aguilar, Jared Dillinger and Gabe Norwood.

Powerade RP cagers willing to play anew

BEIJING – Powerade Team Pilipinas broke camp two days after the 25th FIBA-Asia Championship, disappointed it failed in its mission but expressed willingness to do it all over again when called to serve flag and country.
Members of Powerade RP are willing to don the RP colors once again after their ill-fated campaign in Taijin where they finished eighth.

SBP eyes 3 PBA players to reinforce Gilas squad


SBP executive director Noli Eala named (L-R) Japeth Aguilar, Jared Dillinger, and Gabe Norwood as possible reinforcements to the Smart-Gilas RP basketball team which will compete in next year’s Asian Games and the 2011 FIBA-Asia championships.
Three PBA players are in the wish list of Smart-Gilas national team that will take over the responsibility of representing the country in international meets. Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive-director Noli Eala said the team is not closing the door on professionals reinforcing the squad under Serbian coach Rajko Toroman. “If the PBA is open to any involvement with the national team then it would have to be under the program and direction of the SBP. This includes our desire to have two or three pros with the core of the next national team being Smart-Gilas,” said Eala.
Eala rattled off the three names that Toroman wanted: Japeth Aguilar, Jared Dillinger and Gabe Norwood.

Fernandez pins hope on Williams’ recovery





Sta. Lucia Realty coach Boyet Fernandez yesterday expressed hope Kelly Williams will be able to recover fully before the start of the Philippine Basketball Association’s 35th season.
"He is healthy, and we’re hoping na magtuloy-tuloy na ang recovery niya," said Fernandez of his prized forward Kelly who has been off the court for a little over three months now since he was diagnosed with a blood disorder.
