BEIJING— Putting it in simple terms,Powerade-Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao believes the country is just 10 to 12 points behind the best teams in Asia now.
Despite failing to land at least third place in the Fiba-Asia World Champion qualifying that ended Sunday, Guiao said his perception has changed in just two weeks of handling the national squad in top-notch competition. “My first perspective was that we couldn’t stand up to them anymore,” Guiao told scribes Monday morning, referring to the Middle East squads and China which loomed unbeatable just a few weeks ago in the eyes of the firebrand Burger King mentor.

“But after two weeks here (in the Fiba-Asia), I realized na puede pa pala (that it can still be done),” Guiao said. “Malapit lang pala (they’re not too far in terms of skill and talent after all).”
