SLR upbeat on Williams comeback

MANILA, Philippines - Sta. Lucia Realty has high hopes for the coming PBA season with the return of main man Kelly Williams and the addition of new faces in the team led by Gabby Espinas.

Coach Boyet Fernandez expects Williams to be back in his old deadly form even before the opening of the new season in October.

Aguilar still welcome to join Smart Gilas

MANILA, Philippines – There’s still hope for Japeth Aguilar to join the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team after all.Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala said Smart Gilas has left its door ajar for Burger King-bound Aguilar, the top overall pick in the recent PBA Rookie Draft.“We're very optimistic that he (Aguilar) could still play for the national team,'' said Eala.At 6-foot-9, Aguilar will add more ceiling to Smart Gilas, which already has the 6-foot-11 Gregory Slaughter, Aldrech Ramos (6-7), Jason Ballesteros (6-7) and hopefully, American CJ Giles (6-11) through naturalization.``This is something we have to discuss with Japeth, his team and the PBA,'' said Eala. Aside from Aguilar, Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman wants reigning UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini of Ateneo and Cebu's Junmar Fajardo in the lineup.``We're still looking to have these players. With them, the height problem will be addressed and we will have a respectable team,'' said Eala.Aguilar, who saw action for the Western Kentucky University HillToppers in the US NCAA Division I competition, suited up for Powerade Pilipinas in the recent Fiba-Asia Championship held in Tianjin, China.
”Our players made the right choice. All of them are impressive in the UAAP and the NCAA,'' said Toroman, referring to FEU's Mark Barroca, Dylan Ababou of UST and Letran's 1-2 scoring punch of RJ Jazul and Rey Guevarra.Even though he chose the PBA, Aguilar still expressed interest in joining the Smart Gilas program, a team composed of collegiate standouts bound for the 2011 Fiba-Asia Championship, the qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Olympics.``We will definitely accept him (Aguilar). The door is always open to anybody who wants to help the national team,'' said Eala.
